The Rutland Historical Society Inc. was reactivated in 1965. At the turn of the 20th century, it was known as the Rutland Historical and Improvement Society.

We have been located at 232 Main Street, Rutland Massachusetts, in the Wood House for 28 years and until 2002 shared space with the Rutland Police Department. The Wood House was built in 1915 by Mrs. Sadie Morris and was willed to the Town of Rutland by Hazel Hanff Morris Wood in 1975.

Our collections include:

  • Revolutionary and Civil War Artifacts
  • Furniture
  • Old pictures
  • School memorabilia
  • 18th & 19th Century correspondence
  • Comprehensive array of articles and history of the town's hospitals and private sanatoria.

Many use the facility for researching old homes and their ancestors. We have several of the works of Franklin T. Wood, noted artist/etcher, who once lived here.

We have published three books to date:

  • History of the Town of Rutland  T.C. Murphy  Published: 1970
  • Foundations of a Town, Published:2000
  • Rutland from Time to Time - A Chronology of events from 1686 - 2008, Published:2008

For the past year, we have leased the building from the Town of Rutland. We assumed responsibility for all repairs, utilities and upkeep of the building, as well as the gardens.

Goals And Accomplishments

Since the fall of 2002, we have continued to work in remodeling the Wood House.

We need your help to pursue these renovations. Also, we would like to continue restoring and preserving Rutland's history by being able to acquire and maintain the artifacts of Rutland, which includes binding old books and restoring maps.
